Breastfeeding Concerns That Require Screenings

Breastfeeding is often touted as the “natural” way to feed babies, but that doesn’t mean it’s an easy process.

Many women experience challenges when breastfeeding, and while some of those challenges clear up with a few simple adjustments, others require a closer look. That’s when a screening exam can help.

At Feminine Urgicare, our team offers comprehensive women’s health services, including breastfeeding support and screenings for nursing moms. Learn about some potential issues that indicate it’s time to schedule an evaluation.

1. Persistent nipple pain or breast pain

It’s common to have breast or nipple tenderness in the early days of breastfeeding as your body adjusts to your new routine.

But if you have ongoing nipple soreness, breast pain, burning, or other uncomfortable symptoms, that’s not normal, and it needs evaluation and screening.

Often, nipple pain is due to poor latching technique, and some time spent with a lactation consultant can help. Other times, pain can be due to an underlying infection that needs to be treated to relieve discomfort and prevent complications.

Screening helps identify the cause and determine whether treatment, latch support, or additional care is needed based on your needs.

2. Sudden drop in milk supply

Your milk production will naturally adjust based on your baby’s nursing habits, so it’s natural to have fluctuations in supply. However, if you have a significant or sudden decrease in milk production, it’s worth exploring why.

Scheduling a screening can help identify possible causes, like hormonal fluctuations, thyroid conditions, or even stress, so we can map out a strategy to support milk production.

3. Abnormal lumps or nipple discharge

Many people worry that every breast lump means breast cancer, but that’s not the case. Cysts, blocked ducts, calcium deposits, and infections can all cause lumps, too.

Any lump deserves a breast screening, especially if it persists for a week or more or if it remains after fully emptying your breast of milk.

Aside from the milk, any abnormal nipple discharge should also be evaluated right away. That includes bleeding from improper lashing as well as any type of bloody or thick discharge.

4. Signs of mastitis or breast infection

Mastitis is an infection or inflammation of the breast tissue that can develop in breastfeeding moms. It often begins with a painful area that may appear red or swollen. Some women develop fever or flu-like symptoms.

Mastitis can worsen quickly, and having a medical evaluation and screening as soon as possible is essential to prevent more serious infections or abscesses. Most infections are successfully treated with antibiotics, pain relievers, and sometimes, extra breastfeeding support.

5. Baby-related concerns

Your baby can be a really good indicator of breastfeeding issues.

If your baby isn’t gaining adequate weight, if they seem dehydrated, or if they’re very fussy or still seem hungry after feeding, these are all signs that your baby may not be getting the milk they need to stay healthy.

Sometimes the issue is related to latching problems. Other times, it could be an issue with your milk production or expression. An assessment can get to the root of the problem so you can relax and your baby can thrive.

Get the care you need to nurse confidently

Breastfeeding is a wonderful gift to give to your baby, and the closeness you experience is a gift for you, too.

If you have difficulty breastfeeding or if you notice any issues with your breasts, your nipples, or your milk supply, a medical screening can diagnose the cause and lay the groundwork for treatment.
