5 Pregnancy Emergencies You Should Never Ignore

Pregnancy brings plenty of physical changes, many of which are uncomfortable but still normal.

Symptoms like nausea, fatigue, and swelling are often expected, especially as your body adapts to shifting hormone levels and the added energy demands that come from supporting a growing baby.

That said, some symptoms deserve closer attention, especially if they’re severe or difficult to manage. In this post, our team at Feminine Urgicare reviews five unusual symptoms that should never be ignored, so you can seek emergency pregnancy care as quickly as possible.

1. Nausea and vomiting that won’t let up

Nausea is one of the most well-known symptoms of pregnancy, affecting about three-quarters of moms-to-be during the first trimester. Some women continue to experience nausea on and off throughout the entire nine months.

While mild to moderate symptoms are manageable with a few lifestyle changes and (sometimes) medication, ongoing or severe vomiting can quickly become a serious issue for both you and your baby.

Severe or persistent vomiting can lead to dehydration, increasing the risk of complications like low amniotic fluid or nutrient deficiencies. Seeking prompt care is essential for your comfort and your health.

2. Extreme or overwhelming fatigue

Not surprisingly, supporting an additional human being is hard work, and it can definitely put a strain on your body’s resources.

It’s also not surprising that plenty of women experience fatigue during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, as their bodies are adjusting to pregnancy. This type of fatigue can often be “treated” with a little rest or, when possible, a midday nap.

That said, extreme fatigue that interferes with daily activities is definitely not normal, nor is deep fatigue that comes on suddenly. This type of tiredness could be related to an underlying issue, like:

Prompt evaluation helps identify the cause and ensures you receive the care and support you need to stay healthy.

3. Sudden or severe swelling

Swelling in your ankles and feet is another common side effect of pregnancy for many women, especially during the second and third trimesters. This type of swelling is usually related to fluid retention. In most cases, it’s harmless and resolves with rest and elevation.

However, sudden swelling can be a sign of a serious underlying condition, like preeclampsia — a condition that causes your blood pressure to rise to dangerous levels.

If you experience severe or rapid swelling or swelling in your hands or face, it’s definitely time to call our office so we can determine what’s causing it and provide appropriate care.

4. Severe or persistent headaches

During pregnancy, headaches are a common complaint for many moms-to-be, thanks in part to:

  • Hormonal shifts
  • Poor sleep
  • Stress
  • Dehydration

While an occasional mild headache is probably nothing to worry about, severe, sudden, or persistent headaches should never be ignored.

Severe or persistent headaches could be a sign of preeclampsia or other underlying medical issues that require prompt treatment. Early evaluation is essential to prevent serious complications for both you and your baby.

5. Dizziness that worsens or involves other symptoms

Dizziness is a relatively common symptom during pregnancy, especially as your center of gravity shifts from your growing belly. Morning sickness and troubles sleeping may lead to occasional lightheadedness, as well.

However, if you feel dizzy regularly or if your dizziness is getting worse, it could be a sign of a more serious underlying issue, including significant changes in blood pressure or heart-related issues.

Dizziness accompanied by fever, vision changes, or shortness of breath should also never be ignored.
